This beautiful heritage house is the perfect place to enjoy a peaceful night’s rest or make yourself at home for a longer getaway. Each of the five rooms includes a private bathroom. The Café’s authentic charm and summer patio invite travelers and locals alike to sample a delicious, freshness-forward menu of pastries, snacks, beverages, and small plates.
Built in 1895, La Maison de Jean-Baptiste was originally the church presbytery, housing a long line of clergymen. The last inhabitant was the abbot Jean-Baptiste Ouellet, who served the parishioners of Saint-Denis-De La Bouteillerie for 25 years. After he left, the question remained—what would become of the building? In 2016, a small group of residents had the idea to turn it into a bed and breakfast. Later, the team decided to add a café, wanting to create a place for the community to gather and for travelers to stop and rest.
The group of residents set to work creating a business plan and securing financing. Despite some setbacks, they were able to realize their vision through hard work and dedication. Today, La Maison de Jean-Baptiste’s five rooms are tastefully decorated in local, historically inspired styles and fully equipped to provide guests with a comfortable stay. In the quiet, restful village of Saint-Denis, the bed & breakfast windows overlook the peaceful countryside and picturesque heritage church. The nearest attractions are just a stone’s throw away—right next door, Quebec historic site La Maison Chapais offers guided tours, and within walking distance, visitors can stroll the banks of St. Lawrence, stopping along the way for a breath of fresh sea air or a scenic picnic. In the summer, La Chapelle de Saint-Denis-sur-Mer offers a variety of cultural programming, and across from the church, the Saint-Denis Cercle des fermières [circle of women farmers] provides opportunities to peruse the work of talented local craftswomen.
